The cardinals beat out the pirates in a slugfest today by the final score of 8-5. This game seemed to creep along due to the high amounts of hits. Starlin Castro had a 3 run homer that put the Cards on top in the 2nd. Wainwright went 5 innings giving up 3 runs on 6 hits before turning it over to his bullpen. Reliever Ryan Seigrest provided little relief going 2 innings and giving up 2 runs. Choate worked a scoreless 8 and Romo closed out the ninth. The Cardinals beat the Pirates today in a twelve inning marathon game. The Cardinals won by a score of 5-4. Freese hit a 2 run homer that tied the game up. The game stayed tied until the 12th when Jon Jay hit an RBI double to score Napoli who had walked. Romo closed the game out working a scoreless 12. The Cards kicked off their season on the road in champion-fashion, winning against the Pirates 8-5 on Monday and squeaking out a 5-4 win on Tuesday. In game one, Beltran, Castro and Wieters went--as the rookie pitcher Michael Wacha likes to say--“ ya ya, ” running up four homeruns and five RBIs. Adam Wainwright took the bump and seemed to set the standard for the year, with eight strikeouts. Game one had its downs--star second baseman Brandon Phillips was injured breaking up a double play, but is expected to return soon. The second base fill-in Alexsi Casilla dulled the pain leading the team with two hits and a run.
Game two was a nail-biter coming down to the twelfth inning. From the ninth inning until the last blow in twelve, it was a pitcher’s dual with both sides throwing their ace relievers. David Freese showed off why he’s a leader in this ball club racking up two hits, three RBIs, one home run and no strikeouts over five at bats. The rookie Michael Wacha pitched a brilliant seven innings, only giving up two runs and five hits. But the real fun started when Ryan Siegerist took the mound, pitching two innings with two strikeouts and shutting the Pirate’s order down.
“So far the Cardinals are off to a great start. We are looking forward to an amazing year,” said centerfielder Jon Jay.
It was a sad home opener in St. Louis today with the Cardinals falling short of the Tampa Bay Rays 5-4. Again it was a close game up until the eleventh when the Rays pulled ahead. From the first until the tenth inning the Rays and Cards were toe and toe—every time one team scored the other put one right back up. It was a hard fought game by the boys but the Rays, in the end, out-ran the Cards on the base paths. The Cardinal’s bullpen was a little shaky—probably just some home opener jitters. Hopefully they will be ready for action tomorrow.
The Cards were shut down today in their second home game against the Rays losing by the tally of 6-1. The Cards seemed to waste a lot of chances as they have all season, stranding 9 men on base. Jon Jay provided the only offense with a solo homer in the 7th. The Rays young hurler Yu Darvish seemed to do everything in this game he threw a complete game shutout and hit a single. The Rays finished off a sweep of the Cardinals today winning the first game 5-4 and the second 6-1. The first game was a nail biting 10 inning affair that ultimately ended in a Wil Myers RBI double. The second game was worse though, the Cardinals seemed to be unable to get anything going. They stranded 9 and only had 3 extra base hits. This has been the problem for the Cards all year. They have been unable to get any big hits when they need them. Their pinch hitters this years are batting a whopping .000 with one walk. Overall this team needs more timely hitting and a more clutch bullpen. The starting pitching has been masterful so far. The struggling Cards go to Arlington tomorrow to face off with a powerhouse Rangers team.
The Cardinals travelled to Texas today to face the Rangers who snapped the Card’s two game away-winning streak with a 3-0 shut out. The Ranger’s Davis had the lone long ball in the Lone Star state. The Rangers started off the game putting two up in the first inning and the Cards just couldn’t catch up. After the first, Wainwright found his groove and held the Rangers, but the Cardinals went the entire game without answering any of the runs the Rangers put on the board. With the ejection of centerfielder Jon Jay the Cardinals just couldn’t get anything going and in the end fell to David Price who pitched an outstanding complete game.

Cardinals vs. Rangers Game 2 The Rangers handled the Cards again today due to some quality pitching and an offensive onslaught. The final score of the game was 6-2. Michael Wacha did not have his best stuff giving up homeruns and hits all over the place. The Cards could only muster two runs, both of which were on Beltran solo taters. The Cards only mustered four hits against the Rangers. On the other hand the Rangers had production from many people with homeruns from: Cruz, Crisp, and murphy. The Rangers shut out the Cards in back to back games tallying up eight runs to the Cardinals’ mere two. The Cardinals pitched their top two in the rotation on the bump but that just wasn’t enough to stop the home run-happy Rangers. Both Wainwright and Wacha gave it their best throwing up multiple zeros in the Ranger’s frames but at the end of the day the batting won. The Cardinals’ bats had gone to sleep and couldn’t match any of the Rangers’ runs, even with the valiant effort of Carlos Beltran and his two homeruns which weren’t enough to wake up the Card’s bats. As the Cardinals prepared to head to Cincinnati the Cards captain David Freese said, “ I hope the team can take a hint from Beltran and start hitting the ball again.”

The Cardinals played the second game of their series with the Reds today at Great American Ballpark. Ivan Nova took the bump agains Johnny Cueto. Nova had a rough time going 5 innings and giving up 4 runs while Cueto went 5 only giving up 2 runs. The Reds had key contributions from Gonzalez who had a long ball and Votto who had a big RBI double in the 5th. The Cards had contributions from Weiters, who had a long ball and from Phillips, who had an RBI single.

The Cardinals and Reds split a two-game series this week at Great American Ballpark in Cincinnati. In the first game, the Cardinals exploded with long balls and great pitching. Pitcher Shelby Miller had a complete game, giving up no runs on three hits to go along with his eight strikeouts. Jay, Beltran, Wieters, and Castro all went deep to contribute to a 6-0 win.
In the second game, the Cardinals fell 4-2 to the Reds. The Cards' bats seemed to go back into hibernation, only scoring two runs on seven hits. The Reds, on the other hand, had enough to go around as they scored four runs on eight hits. The Cardinals only had one extra base hit while the Reds had five. The pitching was the same story, with Nova giving up four runs in five innings while Cueto gave up two runs in five innings.
The Pirates came to the “Gateway City” to take on the Cardinals in a rematch. The Pirates led it off with a run in the first and kept a pretty steady barrage of runs throughout the game. Kendrick and Byrd both went the way of the long ball having a mini home run derby--Kendrick beat out Byrd with 2 home runs. Adam Wainwright commented, “At this point my change up appears to looks the size of a beach ball. The only good thing I did today was score in the sixth inning on Castro’s shot to right field.”
The Pirates put two up in the first starting things off strong. That took a huge chunk out of the energy in the stadium up until a brief glimpse of hope in the third when the Cardinals came back to tie it up 2-2. David Freese tried his best hitting a single to right field scoring Carlos Beltran. After Castrol doubled to right field on a line drive, John Jay advanced and scored. But this rally would not last long. In the fifth the Pirates put up two more and the Cards couldn’t match that.
Has the Cardinals train gone off the rails? Coming off back-to-back losses at home against the Pirates it’s a fair question to ask. It’s becoming more and more painfully clear that this rookie team isn’t quite used to the big leagues yet. The team is beginning to look like its being pulled by a few key captains such as shortstop Starlin Castro, third baseman David Freese and right fielder Carlos Beltran. What was thought to be a solid starting line up for the Cardinals has turned out to be the weakest link. Drawing mainly on their bullpen to keep them together. The Cardinals will have to come together as a fielding, hitting and pitching unit to win more games this year, especially going up next against one of the top ranked teams, the LA Dodgers.
Cardinals vs. Dodgers Game 1 The Cardinals got a much needed win today against a tough Dodgers team. The Cards pulled out a 4-3 win with a few key homers Shelby Miller and Edwin Encarnacion. Both had not been hitting well up to this point. Shelby Miller also had a quality start giving up 3 runs in 7+ innings. The only thing that hurt him were the walks. He gave up more walks than hits. Cardinals vs. Dodgers Game 2 The Cards suffered a loss at the hands of the Dodgers today by a score of 5-3. The starting pitching was a weak spot as Ivan Nova only went 2 2/3 innings and giving up 4 earned runs. The harsh decision to take him out was decided in the second inning by the co-manager Ryan Murray who just couldn't watch any longer. He simply told Nova to "Hit the showers." The Cards had a few hits, the most helpful being a home run and triple from Jay and an RBI double from Castro. The bullpen was fighting fires from then on giving up 1 run in 7 1/3 inning. Nova's spot as the fourth man could be in danger. The Dodgers will test their skills with the lowly Nationals next.
Cardinals vs. Dodgers series: The Cards and Dodgers split a 2 game series this week. The Cards took the first one 4-3. The Cards had great hitting and good pitching. One man contributed to both, the starter Shelby Miller pitched great giving up 3 in 7+ innings. He also contributed with the stick with a long ball, his first and probably last of the season. The Cards also had a key homer from Encarnacion. In the second game the Cards fell 5-3 due to a rough outing by Nova, who only lated 2 2/3 innings and giving up 4. The bullpen held it together though and did an impressive job. The hitting just wasn't all there. The series gave hope that the Cards have finally gotten their sticks going again. We will see against the Nats next.
The Cardinals headed to the nation’s capitol today to take on the Washington Nationals. Adam Wainwright took the mound leading the team off to a good start with 5 strikeouts and only 2 earned runs over 8 innings. The only set back in Wainwright’s game were the two back to back homeruns given up in the fourth. Other than that inning, his outing was near flawless, giving life to the Cardinal’s pitching staff. He had the help of the newly awakened Cardinal’s lineup, led by David Freese and Starlin Castro.

Michael Wacha started things off a little shaky giving up one run in the 1st but determined to get his first win of the year, decided enough was enough and shut down the rest of the National’s lineup, pitching a complete game with seven strikeouts and only one earned run. The Nationals led the Cardinals through the 3rd inning until the Cardinals tied it up on a Brandon Phillips’ double to right field. The score remained tied until the 7th inning when David Freese knocked a two run home run to center field.
The brooms were brought out of the closet today as the Cardinals swept the Nationals in their two game series. All the parts were working properly in this series especially the pitching which appeared to have done a 180 from last week. Both Adam Wainwright and Michael Wacha showed why they were in the starting rotation—slamming out seventeen innings altogether, with Wacha pitching a complete game. The bats also picked up totally 8 runs, led by the captain David Freese who hit two homeruns over the two games. After battling the injury suffered while breaking up a double play last week, Brandon Phillips seems to be back and as good as new, helping tie it up with the Nationals in game one, and setting the stage for David Freese’s two run bomb in game two. As the post season draws near the Cardinals seem to have remembered what their ultimate goals were and have started to pick up the pace.
Cardinals and Indians Game 1 Well the bats went back into hibernation today as the Cardinals could do absolutely nothing to get on base, losing to the Indians with a score of 1-0. The Cardinals struck out a total of 10 times as the Indians' Justin Masterson threw a complete game 3 hit shutout. The Indians didn't have much more luck hitting either, as they only could muster 1 run against the Card's hard-luck loser Shelby Miller, who hurled 8 flawless innings of 1 run ball. Cardinals vs. Indians Game 2 The Cards were stifled yet again today as the lost to the Indians by a tally of 3-1. The bats simply could not get going at all (again) as the Cards only had 2 hits and 1 run. If you're counting, that is 5 hits this whole series. Pitcher Joe Kelley, who replaced Ivan Nova in the four-man rotation, had a quality start, allowing 3 runs in 5 innings pitched. On the other side, the Indians put forth Tillman, who pitched a great game to silence the Cards' bats. The Cards only scored on an eighth inning lead off homer from Edwin Encarnacion. The Cardinals came home to St. Louis to face the Atlanta Braves but just could not pull it off in a crushing 3-2 loss. Adam Wainwright went seven innings giving up three runs. Two of the Cardinals bats were hot--David Freese and Mike Napoli both hit homeruns. But the Cardinals just couldn’t push ahead.
The Cardinals lost to the Braves in one of the more boring games that has been played out this year, with the solitary run being scored in the first inning by the Braves’ Troy Tulowitzki. Michael Wacha pitched eight innings only giving up one run but couldn’t get any offensive help from his team.
The two game home stand by the Cardinals was one of the more disappointing series that have happened this season, with each game lost by only one run. Each time the Braves took the lead early and the Cardinals just couldn’t catch up. Wainwright and Wacha went a total of 15 innings over the two games. David Freese, commenting on the Cardinals’ two leading starters, said, “ They did what they were supposed to do and they did it well. We just didn’t give them any help at the plate.”

Pitcher Shelby Miller had a complete game, giving up no runs on three hits to go along with his eight strikeouts. Jay, Beltran, Wieters, and Castro all went deep to contribute to a 6-0 win.
In the second game, the Cardinals fell 4-2 to the Reds. The Cards' bats seemed to go back into hibernation, only scoring two runs on seven hits. The Reds, on the other hand, had enough to go around as they scored four runs on eight hits. The Cardinals only had one extra base hit while the Reds had five. The pitching was the same story, with Nova giving up four runs in five innings while Cueto gave up two runs in five innings.

The Pirates came to the “Gateway City” to take on the Cardinals in a rematch. The Pirates led it off with a run in the first and kept a pretty steady barrage of runs throughout the game. Kendrick and Byrd both went the way of the long ball having a mini home run derby--Kendrick beat out Byrd with 2 home runs. Adam Wainwright commented, “At this point my change up appears to looks the size of a beach ball. The only good thing I did today was score in the sixth inning on Castro’s shot to right field.”

The Pirates put two up in the first starting things off strong. That took a huge chunk out of the energy in the stadium up until a brief glimpse of hope in the third when the Cardinals came back to tie it up 2-2. David Freese tried his best hitting a single to right field scoring Carlos Beltran. After Castrol doubled to right field on a line drive, John Jay advanced and scored. But this rally would not last long. In the fifth the Pirates put up two more and the Cards couldn’t match that.

ReplyDeleteHas the Cardinals train gone off the rails? Coming off back-to-back losses at home against the Pirates it’s a fair question to ask. It’s becoming more and more painfully clear that this rookie team isn’t quite used to the big leagues yet. The team is beginning to look like its being pulled by a few key captains such as shortstop Starlin Castro, third baseman David Freese and right fielder Carlos Beltran. What was thought to be a solid starting line up for the Cardinals has turned out to be the weakest link. Drawing mainly on their bullpen to keep them together. The Cardinals will have to come together as a fielding, hitting and pitching unit to win more games this year, especially going up next against one of the top ranked teams, the LA Dodgers.

The Cardinals got a much needed win today against a tough Dodgers team. The Cards pulled out a 4-3 win with a few key homers Shelby Miller and Edwin Encarnacion. Both had not been hitting well up to this point. Shelby Miller also had a quality start giving up 3 runs in 7+ innings. The only thing that hurt him were the walks. He gave up more walks than hits. Overall the bats finally came back and the Cards pulled out a victory.

The Cards suffered a loss at the hands of the Dodgers today by a score of 5-3. The starting pitching was a weak spot as Ivan Nova only went 2 2/3 innings and giving up 4 earned runs. The harsh decision to take him out was decided in the second inning by the co-manager Ryan Murray who just couldn't watch any longer. He simply told Nova to "Hit the showers." The Cards had a few hits, the most helpful being a home run and triple from Jay and an RBI double from Castro. The bullpen was fighting fires from then on giving up 1 run in 7 1/3 inning. Nova's spot as the fourth man could be in danger. The Dodgers will test their skills with the lowly Nationals next.

ReplyDeleteThe Cards and Dodgers split a 2 game series this week. The Cards took the first one 4-3. The Cards had great hitting and good pitching. One man contributed to both, the starter Shelby Miller pitched great giving up 3 in 7+ innings. He also contributed with the stick with a long ball, his first and probably last of the season. The Cards also had a key homer from Encarnacion.
In the second game the Cards fell 5-3 due to a rough outing by Nova, who only lated 2 2/3 innings and giving up 4. The bullpen held it together though and did an impressive job. The hitting just wasn't all there. The series gave hope that the Cards have finally gotten their sticks going again. We will see against the Nats next.

The Cardinals headed to the nation’s capitol today to take on the Washington Nationals. Adam Wainwright took the mound leading the team off to a good start with 5 strikeouts and only 2 earned runs over 8 innings. The only set back in Wainwright’s game were the two back to back homeruns given up in the fourth. Other than that inning, his outing was near flawless, giving life to the Cardinal’s pitching staff. He had the help of the newly awakened Cardinal’s lineup, led by David Freese and Starlin Castro.

Michael Wacha started things off a little shaky giving up one run in the 1st but determined to get his first win of the year, decided enough was enough and shut down the rest of the National’s lineup, pitching a complete game with seven strikeouts and only one earned run. The Nationals led the Cardinals through the 3rd inning until the Cardinals tied it up on a Brandon Phillips’ double to right field. The score remained tied until the 7th inning when David Freese knocked a two run home run to center field.

The brooms were brought out of the closet today as the Cardinals swept the Nationals in their two game series. All the parts were working properly in this series especially the pitching which appeared to have done a 180 from last week. Both Adam Wainwright and Michael Wacha showed why they were in the starting rotation—slamming out seventeen innings altogether, with Wacha pitching a complete game. The bats also picked up totally 8 runs, led by the captain David Freese who hit two homeruns over the two games. After battling the injury suffered while breaking up a double play last week, Brandon Phillips seems to be back and as good as new, helping tie it up with the Nationals in game one, and setting the stage for David Freese’s two run bomb in game two. As the post season draws near the Cardinals seem to have remembered what their ultimate goals were and have started to pick up the pace.

Well the bats went back into hibernation today as the Cardinals could do absolutely nothing to get on base, losing to the Indians with a score of 1-0. The Cardinals struck out a total of 10 times as the Indians' Justin Masterson threw a complete game 3 hit shutout. The Indians didn't have much more luck hitting either, as they only could muster 1 run against the Card's hard-luck loser Shelby Miller, who hurled 8 flawless innings of 1 run ball. The Cards were frustrated in this game and hope to rebound next game.

The Cards were stifled yet again today as the lost to the Indians by a tally of 3-1. The bats simply could not get going at all (again) as the Cards only had 2 hits and 1 run. If you're counting, that is 5 hits this whole series. Pitcher Joe Kelley, who replaced Ivan Nova in the four-man rotation, had a quality start, allowing 3 runs in 5 innings pitched. On the other side, the Indians put forth Tillman, who pitched a great game to silence the Cards' bats. The Cards only scored on an eighth inning lead off homer from Edwin Encarnacion. It was a disappointing series for the Cards, maybe they'll get back on track next series.

Braves but just could not pull it off in a crushing 3-2 loss.
Adam Wainwright went seven innings giving up three runs.
Two of the Cardinals bats were hot--David Freese and Mike Napoli
both hit homeruns. But the Cardinals just couldn’t push ahead.

The Cardinals lost to the Braves in one of the more boring games that has been played out this year, with the solitary run being scored in the first inning by the Braves’ Troy Tulowitzki. Michael Wacha pitched eight innings only giving up one run but couldn’t get any offensive help from his team.

ReplyDeleteThe two game home stand by the Cardinals was one of the more disappointing series that have happened this season, with each game lost by only one run. Each time the Braves took the lead early and the Cardinals just couldn’t catch up. Wainwright and Wacha went a total of 15 innings over the two games. David Freese, commenting on the Cardinals’ two leading starters, said, “ They did what they were supposed to do and they did it well. We just didn’t give them any help at the plate.”
